POLK CITY, Fla. – The Chico State University wakeboard team won its second national title in three years at the 12th Collegiate Wakeboard National Championships, May 31-June 2, in Guthrie, Okla. The weather cooperated after two tumultuous days. Coverage will premiere on Wednesday, July 11 (9 p.m. EDT) as part of The Alt Games Presented by Jack in the Box® on CBS Sports Network. Wakeboarding also will be featured as part of the Alt Games Highlight Show Presented by Jack in the Box® airing on the CBS Television Network on Saturday, July 15 (2 p.m. EDT).
Leading after the first day of competition, Chico State expanded its lead with an opening win in the Men’s D final by Eric McFadyen (Red Bluff, Calif.). Five other teams were very closely packed pursuing second place in the overall standings.
No rider from Chico State qualified for the finals of the Men’s C finals. Virginia Tech’s Adam Van Dyke (Blacksburg, Va.) won the event. A second-place finish by Brett Lund (Ellensburg, Wash.) moved Central Washington University into a mere five-point lead over Chico State with Virginia Tech just five points behind second place.
The University of Wisconsin moved into the title hunt with a win in wakeskating by John Zdeblick (Middleton, Wis.). But the second-place finish by Cole Kraiss (Tempe, Ariz.) moved Arizona State into the top position, followed by Central Washington and Chico State.
In the Men’s B finals, won by Jeff Goldblum (Northport, N.Y.) of Virginia Tech, Virginia Tech was propelled into the lead. A second-place finish by the University of Wisconsin’s Alex Marine (Excelsior, Minn.) moved the Badgers into the second position overall followed closely by Chico State. With two finals remaining, the competition was very close and highly competitive.
Chico State’s Diana Fleenor (Arroyo Grande, Calif.) won the Women’s A final followed by Louisiana-Monroe’s Kalynn Oswalt (Monroe, La.). With only one event remaining, Fleenor had clinched the title for Chico State and the race was on for second.
The Men’s A final was won by Zdeblick, his second win of the day, moving Wisconsin into the second overall position, 15 points behind the champions from Chico State, who also won in 2010 in San Diego. Virginia Tech finished third followed by Central Washington University and Arizona State.
Thursday and Friday were filled with challenges to the event. The qualifying rounds began on time on Thursday on the Oklahoma River, but were halted by the local health department due to high bacteria levels at the site site after two nights of intense rain and tornadoes in the area. The permit was revoked and the event was forced to find a new location.
The Guthrie Golf and Country Club, 30 miles north of Oklahoma City, came to the rescue and graciously allowed the event to be staged on their beautiful property. The remainder of Thursday was spent on relocation, rescheduling and coordinating with CBS on the change of venue. On Friday, the weather continued to be uncooperative as heavy rains and lightning washed out much of the morning and afternoons events. Once cleared, competition ensued with a revised format, completing all of the qualifying rounds. Saturday’s competition combined the semifinals into one large final round in order to complete the event and allow riders every opportunity to secure the national title.
